Creating Garden Rooms in a Large Open Space

A 50' × 30' garden provides enough room to do more than simply line up raised beds. This Garden Plan divides the space into several distinct growing areas while maintaining broad, open walkways throughout the garden.

Large L-shaped beds anchor the left side of the layout, while a shaped bed creates another substantial growing area on the right. Straight raised beds fill the remaining spaces without making the garden feel crowded.

At the center is an open 8' × 10' area that can serve as a gathering space, seating area or garden focal point. Positioning this open area near the middle helps break up the scale of the garden and gives the surrounding beds a sense of organization.

The wide separation between the different growing areas creates natural pathways through the garden. Rather than trying to fill every available foot with raised beds, this plan uses open space as part of the design.

Shown on a 1-ft grid, the plan demonstrates how a large garden can combine long growing areas, shaped beds, generous walkways and a central destination within one organized layout.

Garden area: 50' × 30'
Layout style: Large shaped and straight raised beds arranged around a central open area
Best suited for: Large gardens where growing space, wide walkways and a central gathering or focal area are all part of the design
