Where My Story Started
I spent my summers on my grandparents’ farm here in Central Texas. That was my summer camp. We grew tomatoes, watermelons, cantaloupes, corn, potatoes and all kinds of truck crops.
When it was time to harvest, we picked the vegetables, loaded them into the truck and drove them to stores around the county. We’d pull up and sell what we’d grown right out of the truck to the produce managers at each store. That’s how it was done back then.
Those summers taught me the value of hard work, self-reliance and the deep satisfaction that comes from growing food yourself.
That experience has stayed with me my whole life, and its influence can still be seen in what we’re doing at Metal Garden Beds today.
There’s something about growing food yourself—planting, tending, watching the garden grow, and then bringing that harvest of food to the table.
A New Kind of Farm
Most people today don’t have a farm like my grandparents. They may have a backyard, a side yard or just a sunny piece of ground. But that’s more than enough.
A micro-farm takes this same ancestral idea—use the land you have to grow food—and bring that food to the table. Whether it’s a few raised beds or a full backyard garden, you can grow fresh vegetables, herbs and fruit right outside your door.
