Creating a Garden with Shape and Movement
This 48' × 20' Garden Plan takes a very different approach from traditional rows. Large shaped beds anchor both ends of the garden, while smaller beds and a distinctive center bed create a series of growing areas through the middle.
The two large beds at either end use multiple turns to create planting space that can be reached from different directions. Their mirrored placement gives the garden balance while the open areas within the shapes create natural places to walk and work.
Several smaller raised beds lead through the center of the garden rather than forming a straight row. At the bottom center, a T-shaped bed adds another substantial growing area and helps tie the two sides of the layout together.
The result is a garden with a strong sense of movement. Instead of walking up and down parallel rows, the gardener can move through a series of individual growing spaces, with generous open areas connecting them.
Shown on a 1-ft grid, this plan demonstrates how modular raised garden beds can be combined into more imaginative shapes while still keeping every growing area accessible.
