Working Around an Existing Structure

Not every garden starts with an empty rectangle. This 32' × 32' Garden Plan shows how raised beds can be arranged around an existing structure while still creating long, productive growing rows.

Two long raised beds make use of the full available length along the left side of the garden. Two shorter rows continue the pattern across the upper portion of the space, leaving the lower-right area open for the existing structure and the access it requires.

Instead of forcing the garden into a perfectly symmetrical layout, the plan uses the available space where it makes sense. The long rows provide substantial growing capacity, while generous walkways keep each bed accessible from both sides.

This type of layout can work especially well when planning a raised bed garden around a shed, greenhouse, utility area or another permanent feature that needs to remain accessible.

The Garden Plan is shown on a 1-ft grid so the relationship between the raised beds, open areas and existing structure can be seen before the garden is built.
